lacking inspiration, james didn't get a chance to make me my long-standing tradition of an annual birthday cake this july. it was honestly fine, as my birfday was full of The Good and i don't remember feeling neglected in the sweets arena whatsoever.

a vision came to him over the past week for 2010's birthday cake, and tonight was the special night.

the final product:
arot
2010

what you cannot see:
-homemade mascarpone* cream frosting between layers (total: 3)
-2 belgian waffles with sprinkles in the batter
-1 square funfetti cake
-candles: a 3 and a 1; numerous little champagne bottle candles**
-topped with wild maine blueberry syrup

*mascarpone is, apparently a type of cheese--something like creme fraise--it is decadent and light and glorious. mixed with sugar it is the perfect whipped cream. james found out about it after probing the new seasons' deli employees to find out what's in our long-standing favorite dessert, banana bread cake for two, and apparently this is the magic ingredient.
**i love tiny things!

we couldn't remember whether or not i got a cake for last year's birthday, which is probably because we were in the middle of buying/moving into la plantation du paon at that time. i scoured old LJ posts and flickr and found the last few years' worth of cakes. important things to know: i don't like chocolate; i love marshmallow and sugar-sweetness and foods that typically eight year olds get excited about (pixie sticks, pez, cotton candy, you name it). cut for your foodie pleasure. )
