i have been working on this list for a ridiculously long time. inspired by [livejournal.com profile] makenmelodye, [livejournal.com profile] verybadhorse, and the mighty life list on the mightygirl blog, i had a loose idea what i wanted this list to accomplish.

but now it's nearly the end of the year, when most people are starting to think about their Year In Review or Resolutions (or: resolutions) for the new year. i wanted to post this before i even went there: while a lot of items on my "mighty maximalist list" may be goals or hopes of some kind, there's a pretty clear difference. maybe. a work in progress, but here is the start of my list:

bike one way to/from seattle (or: do a multi-day bicycle tour) | brew my own kombucha | climb a mountain | complete immunotherapy and never have allergies again | dance with a complete stranger for more than two songs | develop all the mysterious rolls of film in my possession | drink homemade moonshine | experience maple taffy/candy (or: eat sugar on snow) | foster fuzzy creatures | get a henna tattoo that sprawls a large portion of my body (shoulders?) | get a masters degree | get all of my music, A-Z, on one hard drive, organized by genre | get hair extensions | get professional prints of 10 of my best photographs | give $1,000 to a charity that means a lot to me | go camping | go to carnival in Trinidad | go to kensington market in Toronto | join the sisters of perpetual indulgence | know how to make 10 classy old-fashioned cocktails without consulting the internet (thanks, m!) | learn bicycle maintenance | learn how to make a really good savory pie | learn how to poach an egg | learn how to play one song on one instrument | learn specific dance styles and practice at bars with abandon | live in a foreign country for one month (or longer) | make a remixed track | make cotton candy | open for a band i really like | own a pinball machine | own a tent | own or open a bar or restaurant | play a videogame for one hour with attention to the rules and an interest to do well | read a book in French | read or experience every play written by Shakespeare | record a DJ set and send copies to penpals and friends | ride 10 roller coasters i've never ridden | ride in a cop car | run a mile | see a broadway musical | see leonard cohen perform live | snow-shoe (and/or board?) | stay in the ice hotel | take a cross-country roadtrip (yes, another one) | take a kick-boxing class | take a self-defense class | touch a theramin | try caviar | try to ride a unicycle or tallbike | undo the karmic injustices of the world and meet david bowie | visit 10 u.s. states i've never been to (or maybe…all of them?) | visit mackinac island in Michigan | visit marsh's free museum in long beach, Washington | volunteer at an animal shelter or humane society | volunteer for cannes film festival | volunteer with the sloths in costa rica | watch the director commentary tracks on 5 of my favorite films | wear fake eyelashes with abandon | write short, creative pieces of writing

in the past week, i:

-spray painted henrietta, my old clunky cruiser bicycle, a rust-proof purple
-transplanted and moved starts and plants
-watched a hummingbird circle and sample the hibiscus tree outside my bedroom window; realized i possibly have never seen a hummingbird in real life before
-drew an octopus on an article of clothing in sharpie
-spent time with my one of my favorite girls
-wore electric blue mascara which (surprisingly) frames the edges of everything your eyes see (blue, blue electric blue)
-spent time in the emergency department, petting the top of my friend's head
-added more vinyl spirals to my bike helmet
-felt aimless and small and stifled and distracted and marginal
-felt creative and beautiful and wild and free
-saw and touched a purple starfish; realized i have never seen a starfish in real life before
-walked along the pacific ocean shoreline
-received a handwritten letter from someone in my zipcode, which made me want to immediately switch from email to snail mail with everyone i communicate with
-danced
-drew on my porch with sidewalk chalk
-drank iced chai lattes with soymilk
-drank wine, beer, absinthe-mixed drinks, southern comfort out of a flask, four loco (not all at once)
-slept decadently
-found photos from middle school
-fixed a necklace, broke another
-had my first ever professional massage
-DJ'd for pretty girls with tattoos
-sent entirely too many text messages
-woke up with lady gaga in my head
-spent one hour in a sensory deprivation tank
-got inspiration for nearly every upcoming event i'm thinking of, INCLUDING halloween (theme)
-ate nearly every meal on my front porch
-listened to the new national album, high violet, on repeat
-re-read all the dog-eared pages of the corrections, and underlined the best passages
-progressed slowly on sontag's on photography
-carried pockets of stones out to the backyard; felt, at moments, heavily woolfian, which made me sad
-cut 3 pairs of pants into shorts
-skipped yoga
-suspected birds of stealing my planted sunflower seeds
-celebrated a friend's unemployment
-stole beer glasses from a brewery to add to my collection
-nearly broke down in tears listening to M83, which i never realized was so poignant and epic with undivided attention
-gave up on something i thought i really wanted but am wise enough to know better
-rode two different bicycles
-drove two different cars
-wore shorts prematurely in 60-degree weather
-attended a house party
-attended a DJ night
-attended first thursday

things i learned last night:
-the aladdin theatre has a very strict "no professional cameras" policy
-i cannot run more than one block
-stephen merritt is a hobbit of a man, but i love him all the same
-i do not like monopolowa vodka

next year's travel plans are very, very up in the air right now. there is a lot to juggle, and as always, i'm trying to make time for as much as possible.

definites for 2010:
-park city
-nola
-austin
-adventures with [livejournal.com profile] verybadhorse
-BLC 2010

considering:
-asheville
-WI (for trivia voyeurism)
-montreal/quebec city/QC
-overseas/out of country something

sundance is in january. [livejournal.com profile] verybadhorse adventure no. 1 is slated for february. for march, i have options: if i go to austin then, i can do SXSW. nola and asheville are also on the table: i could piggy-back two of the three of these, which is my preferred method of travel. otherwise, all three cities are possibilities for spring or fall. trivia would be in stevens point, in april.

traditionally, i don't like to travel during summer, as it's both too warm to enjoy anywhere south of here, and generally too expensive. i'd make exceptions for BLC.

i'd like to get out of the country again next year (the international wishlist, so far, includes: new zealand, switzerland, india, ireland, scotland, nova scotia), but am not sure what's really attainable financially. i wonder if 2010 should just focus on people, the driving factors in pretty much all the (north american) destinations above (well, that and food).

as of late, i've been thinking about future travel destinations even further out of my comfort range (in other words, not just talking language barrier alone anymore), though i'm unsure of the fit. not that getting out of one's comfort zone is a bad thing (it isn't; i think there's something Significant that happens the first time you step out of the country in which you were born), but it warrants a lot of consideration. i'm well aware of my many -isms that would shadow over me in many location; sasha had indirectly talked me out of accompanying her to trinidad with numerous stories of how women/americans were treated there. but i mean, during the train ride through rural czech republic, i'm the type of girl whose biggest concerns were a) remembering what stop to get off at, b) remembering snippets of phrases in german (or where to point to on a ticket/map) and c) whether or not my iphone had service. seriously.

From sundance film festival 2009 | ut

i submitted my alumni application to the sundance film festival today, and in doing so, i got all nostalgic and excited. i had promised myself i would do a proper "recruitment" post (or several), to motivate my good readers to apply for volunteer positions. this is that.

as most of you probably remember, i applied to work at sundance in park city utah last year completely on a whim. in fact, i had all-but-forgotten about the application when the call came in. i said yes, made the proper arrangements, and ended up having an incredibly surreal, dizzying, and amazing time (and in utah, no less!).

let me make things easy for you.

so you want to be a volunteer at the sundance film festival?
  • start here. this is the volunteer overview, and i couldn't say it any better.
  • sundance 2010 is 21-31 january. many full-time volunteer positions span a longer time than the 10-days of the festival (i worked every day for the 17 days i was there, totaling over 130 hours; "full time" only means 80+ hours, so obviously i have something wrong with me--not all f/t positions are that intense, but many are). for part-time, you just have to work 24+ hours during the festival (but obviously, the perks aren't as good).
  • the list of departments (positions), requirements, and volunteer benefits are here. i worked in logistics last year (and you can read all about that here); this year i applied for music cafe, filmmaker lodge, and/or press.
  • alumni volunteers (read: me!) can pull rank...and get first-timers some priority. so if you're thinking about applying, message me here or via email, and i can help you with your application, answer questions, etc.
  • FAQ.
  • new volunteer application. deadline is november 15th, but you have a better chance the sooner you apply (they start reviewing alumni applications in september, and first-time volunteers in october).

    reasons why you should volunteer:
  • the films. they're free, they're independent, and they're not released yet. some of the movies that got the most hype last year, you guys are just now starting to hear about or see (e.g. the cove, paper heart, dead snow). there's Q&A, with filmmakers/actors. did i mention they're free?
  • the city. first off, SNOW. secondly, park city is fantastic and adorable, full of charming places to eat/drink, surrounded by ski resorts and parks and mountains. and the city has two modes: sundance, and non-sundance. full-time volunteers get to see them both, and it's an impressive transformation to watch.
  • the people. the 1500 volunteers, the hundreds of (year-round) staff, the locals, the press & industry, the musicians, filmmakers, and actors.

reasons why you should NOT volunteer:
  • you are lazy, complain incessantly, dislike authority, or in any way are "burdened" by your job duties that are, unsurprisingly, unpaid. don't bother applying: we all hate working with people like you.
  • you're in it for the schwag and/or celebrities. you'll have your chance at both, but you'll be pretty annoying if those are your prime motivators. (even SFF says "those interested in star-sightings and free stuff need not apply.") least favorite moment from last year was finding out a volunteer was stealing filmmaker schwag nightly (timberland shoes, jackets and more) to sell and/or give to family: he would've gotten the stuff anyway at the end of the festival, and i was the one who got to tell filmmakers who Earned The Stuff that we "didn't have their size."
  • you are old and want to hit on young pretty women. nevermind, you'll fit right in, just try to avoid talking to me this year, won't ya?
  • you hate snow/the cold.
  • you don't like film.

overall i have to say, even though it was hard (it was also post-surgery for me, and i may not have been as ready for the physical ramifications as i thought), it was a rollercoaster of amazing experiences. in some ways, i imagine my experience is similar to those who have had amazing "summer camp" memories--throwing themselves into something not at all tethered to their "real life," having moments of buoyancy and and discovery. i knew pretty much upon leaving utah last january that i would be back for seconds.
chouchoot: (i heart oregon)
conquered at the new abode:

-unpacking and situating furniture. there's still boxes upon boxes (books and decor, mostly), but things are mostly functional now.
-commuting to work. includes a this beautiful view (this morning, greygreygrey; monday morning, clouds leaving shadows upon forest park across the river) on my bike.
-opening windows that had been painted (?) shut. almost all are functional now, which has been absolutely necessary in this heat (and conversely, during beautiful cool nights like last night).
-new locks.
-local eateries (sushi and thai; we're not counting getting-ice-cream-every-day-from-7-11 a "local eatery"). the two nearest restaurants are passable for sushi/thai fixes in a pinch, but are nothing amazing.
-(beginning to) landscape the backyard. i was going to let all this go until spring, seeing as my garden is all in pots and i have a thousand other things to do anyway, but yesterday's weather was astoundingly beautiful, so i started shoveling a path and making beds for a winter garden (!).
-tile. only i'm not doing this one: i found a pretty awesome contractor whom i've enjoyed having around the house. by next week, i'll be the owner of a black & white checkerboard tiled kitchen and dining room.
chouchoot: (Default)
saving me from summer:
-newman's own all natural lemonade
-homemade guacamole (i'm so good at it, kids)
-window fans at night
-root beer floats
-ice cream in general
-late night bike rides
-waiting out 9:30pm
-random order's drink menu
-egg salad sammiches
-soda (i know, i know)
-cold water bath soaks, with books
-public transit where the AC is working
-frozen bottles of water and/or ice
-sixty degree nights like last night
chouchoot: (proofread graffiti)
(last vegas post--other than pictures--i promise.)

-the strip (las vegas blvd) is by and large not an expansively long area (from north to south, no more than 2.5-3 miles).
-public transit is $3 one way, and the buses take longer than walking.
-cab drivers starting fare at $3.50 may or may not be better than the bus. that said, cab drivers who take you on "short cuts" off the strip that end up tagging on an extra 2 miles are doubtfully better than walking/busing.
-drivers, while driving willingly (regularly?) in vegas, hate pedestrians and traffic, and make this known as audibly as possible.
-shuttles to/from hotel to/from airport are $6-6.50 a person and definitely the most efficient way to go.
-slot machines (by and large) do not take coins, nor do the cashiers.
-vegetarianism is a concept as foreign as vegetables.
-tap water is totally drinkable.
-customer service is optional.
-ladies: your skimpiest dress and/or lowest cut top will never make you think twice--you'll probably still be one of the more conservatively dressed; dudes: it is totally cool to wear your beer bongs around your neck, and worry not about whether or not your collared striped shirt clashes or matches with your dudebros striped shirt.
-like new orleans (but with less incentive), there are no open container laws, which means you can walk/drink everywhere.
-vegas would be intolerable sober.
-it is, apparently, still cool to play "rump shaker."
-for the city that never sleeps, it also never swims (our hotel pool closed at 7pm).

casino summary: treasure island is self-contained creme-de-la-creme (good AND cheap restaurants, not smoky, comfortable rooms, amazing beds); the mirage appears to be completely passable with nothing (other than a beatles-themed bar) extraordinary or awful; the palazzo is new and shiny but plays good 80s music in the casino lobby; circus circus smells like 1986; paris could be better, and could use saucier/thematic cocktail waitress uniforms; flamingo should either be tackier or nicer, but needs to commit to one or the other; stratosphere only gives good drink service to men; wild bill's saloon just might be completely depressing.

i never thought i'd say this, but for essentially being the same city with a different schtick, orlando is doing tourism and customer service and fun stuff and efficiency the way it should be done. i was moderately aware of overly pleasant service after living in the shadow of the mouse after 15 years, but now in contrast all i can say is VEGAS UR DOIN IT WRONG.

it's going to busy-busy for the next month, but i'm totally OK with this.

friday night i met up with [livejournal.com profile] thetathrees and her harem of wonderfulness at east end for pre-birthday antics of costume-dress-up and photoboothing. saturday was early-morning car rental pick-up, IKEA, then driving up to seattle for [livejournal.com profile] fraxl & [livejournal.com profile] gehn's housewarming party. the party was a huge success and an insane amount of fun. sunday was glorious brunch at cafe flora with our wonderful hosts, then back home to portland, stopping off at H&M on the way. ($200 worth of damage, but on 11 items and all completely amazing/essential finds.)

last night i took solace in my empty house and did some very essential things:
-5 loads of laundry.
-pasta makin' for lunches.
-reorganizing of my closet with new IKEA cubbies, also switching out "summer" with "winter" clothes for closet space. the sweaters are in season, folks.
-trial run of both costumes with great success. the make-up wasn't great for either of them but i have time to figure out what to do.
-music-gathering for the bitch magazine event. i've got a lot more to take care of before the big event but the music issue is the most daunting.

countdown:
-10/22 final bitch meeting, secure donated liquor
-10/25 bitch magazine sm[art] auction
-10/26 portland zombie walk
-10/30 [livejournal.com profile] fraxl & [livejournal.com profile] gehn in town!
-10/31 halloween
-11/01 par-tay
chouchoot: (mr. wolf)
oh, sweet gloriousness. it's drizzling, overcast. all the windows are open and the house is 71 degrees inside (66 outside). tomorrow's high is 68. i have to remember this...this in august (and the memory of a very chilly june) when i am lost in a sea of misery that is created by hot weather. like this past weekend.

and it's almost september. which, at some point, means fall. fall leaves. less sun. more rain. cool, cold. then...october.

and yeah, i've been thinking about halloween. i bought some supplies this weekend to improve on my costume (just a few details were in need of upgrading). i still need shoes. and, i might need a second costume, depending on and what else is going on in stumptown (and/or the emerald city) for hallow's eve.

october means:
-the bitch magazine sm[art] auction (judy chicago!)
-i will be having a (small) party!
-halloween falls on a friday (shut up and dance!)
-i may be (co)organizing a costumed bike ride!
-i may be going to seattle again (H&M!)
-pumpkins!

(this post is so nerdy i almost got embarrassed and deleted it...but, i'm not going to.)

-wed: long bike ride along the columbia river; dinner at siam society with james; birfday dessert surprises (rice crispy treats sandwiched with ice cream, whipped cream, caramel, sprinkles).

i guess i'm done celebrating. for now.

i will talk about yesterday, tomorrow.

in the meantime, let's talk about travel.
i have sworn off flying this year, unless something major happens to improve my fiscal situation (read: real estate sale, landing a killer job, etc). that said, i just can't imagine going all year without going anywhere, so here's my hopeful 2008 list, all via car or train...

-vancouver island on the BC coast (above)
-vancouver BC
-san fransisco CA
-seattle WA as often as possible

the beauty is seattle is just around 3 hours away; vancouver canada is 5 hours away--a whole other country, folks!--and san franny is drivable in a way this southern girl is accustom to (read: 10+ hours). there are trains that leave pretty much all the time for all the above; seattle and vancouver's train ride is the same length as driving, but with more flexibility, and cheaper than the car rental.

i definitely want to take my sister to seattle (am thinking about it for her birthday), and while i know she will be in awe of the oregon coast, i really don't think she'll enjoy the experience until summer.

2009 i have a few ideas for travel, but it's too far away to even plan. i hope to get back over to europe then, maybe revisit the northeast, perhaps vegas, colorado, and knock chicago off my "big cities to visit" list. seriously, that's all i've got. i have promised james iceland but who knows when that'll happen.

where do you want to go?
chouchoot: (eurotrash)
hopeful list of things to do this weekend:
  • finally set up the music room (furniture arrived today)
  • take a stab at new freelance project (slightly daunting: high school AP editorial vs. elementary school texts i'm used to editing)

  • watch barbarella
  • nightcap at tiga, and possibly seeing my sister's friend's band play @ the know

  • make essential cds that have been lost/damaged, or that james never had, for DJing
  • update resume--expand back to 2 pages, redesign layout, end up with 3 different versions for job applicability
  • dye over my blue hair and change out piercing/gages to small studs
  • find someplace in PDX to try to watch the oscars (not looking promising and i sold my TV before the move)
  • prepare for jeff & bill's visit next week
  • more work

gems of holiday cheer from the past few days:

-[livejournal.com profile] rainbowrev's holiday party on friday
-helping greg prime and paint the set for the big NYE event
-experiencing a buy nothing christmas
-cajun gumbo dinner feast
-seeing sweeney todd and smuggling in thermos' full of spiked egg nog
-receiving my first paycheck from freelancing (since i began...oh, in september)
-dreaming of getting a white christmas
