this weekend was quite nice.

friday i sought to do nothing but clean, organize, and regroup. i did this, listening to (though sometimes walking in the room to stare at favorite scenes) the dvds of rufus wainwright - all i want, moulin rouge, and love's labor's lost. it took pretty much 2.5 of these films to put away all my halloween decor (madness). bonus was that i got all the laundry and cleaning done.

saturday day was spent lazily sleeping in, playing around with james' new laptop, and working on archiving all my files from my PC. james made our food to contribute to the evening's potluck and game night, we both half-watched this suicide girls: the first tour DVD that was just terrible (the most boring/common girls, all scrawny, young, and similar looking...yawn.) later on that night we met bethany, jason, and andrea at colin & renee's for dinner and balderdash. for friends (mine) who didn't know each other, it became a great group that opened up very quickly and comfortably to one another. the game was fun, though i'm a terrible "dasher" because i can't read without getting the giggles. our game wrapped up around 11:30pm, at which point i went for a walk with [livejournal.com profile] danielmath around lake eola. there, we saw the trainwreck of the "crafts with a silent p" festival that was going on over the weekend--school mascot hobby horses, wooden anchors for a yard, yarn puppets for kids 3 to 103; everything we saw was totally dumpy, and they must've known it because they didn't even make attempts to secure these gems overnight.

sunday james and i woke up and headed out to see marie antoinette, which i had been dying to see since last fall (when the trailer first gave me goosebumps). after so many terrible reviews, i was disenchanted, but still determined to see it.

i've told everyone this morning that i "didn't hate" marie antoinette: it's that kind of half-assed reaction that i'm honestly a little relieved to have felt, fearing far worse (like, walking out.). in fact, i felt very strongly about the beginning of the film, finding it beautiful and articulate. coppola's strengths were her use of minimal dialogue, sweeping shots (but then again, how can you mess up versailles?), beautiful music, and showing, not telling; she was most successful showing the absurdity of the court and the innocence of marie antoinette as she entered it. my favorite moments were those where marie is literally surrounded by the inquisitive, apathetic, or judgemental faces of the french people--coppola stuffs each shot full of these "eyes" and we feel real pressure and even suffocation on behalf of marie antoinette. kirsten dunst (and [livejournal.com profile] coffeefortwo, your 7 words were right) can't speak her way out of a paper bag, but there were a few beautiful moments of silent-film acting where dunst doesn't suck. schwartzman as louis, on the other hand, was tiring and awkward. other low points of the film: molly shannon in period garb (!?); "i want candy" shopping/eating spree that felt like something out of legally blonde; and the emotionless voice-over letter, which literally had me rubbing my temples. high points (to be fair): marianne faithfull; the little french-speaking daughter frolicking in the garden; the use of the cure, new order, and siouxsie in a completely picturesque and beautiful way, making some moments so visually and audibly splendid i found myself smiling (the wedding and sunset scenes particularly stand out for me here).

all that said, boy has this been a mediocre year for cinema.

after the movie we met up with some of james' old friends (howard and john, and their friend kevin) for a gay vegan bbq (which wasn't really vegan but that's the nickname of the event; it was pretty much gay except james). howard and john threw a halloween party the same night as our party, so we didn't get to go this year (last year was awesome); we joked about party swapping next year if our events land on the same night again. we end up staying until well after dark, but we had such a nice time with them. once home, james and i bailed on the tilly and the wall show, mostly because we were feeling lazy and cheap; instead we watched the notorious bettie page, which was average.

this morning i woke up and our bedroom door was off the hinges, which is pretty ridiculous and funny to me.
